How many watts is that heat lamp? I would put something underneath it so that it absorbs the heat. Also check the temperature underneath the heat lamp on the substrate to see what temperature he has to bask at.

O and make sure you have a hide for him at each end of the tank so that he can properly thermoregulate. A little pond would definatly be good, but Don't forget to test the temperature underneath the heat lamp and make sure that it's 95-100F underneath the lamp and a temperature gradient of 85-95F. Also Please add a rock or log underneath the basking spot because it will absorb the heat and allow him to bask as he would in the wild. Having the sun rays beating down on top of his body, and absorbing the heat from logs, rock, etc from under his belly.
 
thanks......so a regular large rock should do in the basking spot?
