Forget Play Sand, Use Pool Filter Sand

The Pool Filter sand that I bought last summer....had a warning label on it, about breathing in the vapors from it while rinsing it, etc. Sort of scared me. Play sand, for a kids sand box that you can get at HomeDepot for less than $4. a huge bag...I ended up rinsing so much, I gave up on that idea! Lastly, I bought sand from PetSmart and the colored childrens playsand from Walmart. Rinsing was incredibly easy and quick. I have no problems with water clarity. To each his/her own I guess. I won't use gravel, my lil' Cory herd wouldn't like it.

Lapis Lustre Monterey beach sand, 50# for $14.00. Best stuff I found and use in my tank. Way cheaper than pool filter sand and easy to clean.

Sent from Honolua Bay in between sets, sitting on my surfboard.

the lfs around here sell red flint sand... quarry rock. i swear by it... pfs killed some of my fish after i washed it thoroughly.... to each his own but i'll never use silica again.

i use pool sand. went to a local pool store and got a 50 lb bag for 10bucks. i love it. wont ever use gravel again. all the debris n errant food stay on the surface of it n the fish can find it later. fish also love digging in it and filtering through it.

How did they die? If you don't mind me asking.

I used playsand from homedepot and hated it made water cloudy and flew around the tank to easy, switched to pool filter sand from leselies pools and love it will not use any thing else(heavy enough to vacuum, water clarity is great, falls back to the bottom immediatley when disturbed, and stays pretty clean, poop stays on top)

If anyone is interested give this product a try. It's UNIMIN quartz sand size 2040. It can usually be picked up or ordered from a masonry supplier. I like it for many reasons. It is cheap @ $10 for a 50lb sack, it looks very natural compared to pool filter or play sand which can be too much of one color. The 2040 granuals are just the right size for most uses, they are big enough to allow roots to get a good grip and to keep it from packing down causing bacterial problems, and they are small enough to keep food from settling in. It rinses easily, it is easy to vacuum and best of all, to me anyway, the granuals don't have sharp edges that can injure fish that like to dig in it, especially bottom feeders with barbels.
