formica?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have worked with formica for years. I would not build a tank out of it. It would not stand up to submersion.

Leave it up to Rivermud to prove someone wrong.. I'm still waiting to see your experiment with the tank your are going to do..lol

That guy in the thread you posted never even filled up that tank if you read it.. he got another one and it was glass..

Here is a quote from a guy that posted in there..

I have always been dubious, probably more than I should, of the Formica lined tanks. Some of the Collins Aquarium tanks had water bubbles behind the Formica, and at least one had a peeling section of Formica, however it didn't seem to be leaking. The resin adhesive that should have been holding the Formica still seemed to be
waterproofing the plywood even if the Formica was no longer sealing the tank.

It's just too big of a gamble for me to ever see fit for a tank that is supposed to last years and tears..

As Pharaoh said. I have worked with that stuff for a long time and i just don't see it doing the job..

There are many other water proofing methods that are not that expensive really..

I'm still waiting for someone to do a tank with truck bed liner as the initial shell, and then a couple coats of epoxy paint over that.. I'm betting it would work fine..

Issack, you seem to have a problem with me, if you don't like me or what I do then come out with it. To address your comment, I wasn't out to prove someone wrong. I was out to provide information. The post shows that it has been done and they were in use. That's what the question was. People seem to have this idea that there is only one way to do things or that their way is the best. Since you did read the thread you'll notice that it does indeed show that Formica tanks were in use and had been used in the past even if it was not used by the person who owned the tank in that thread. If you read in depth on that post however, it talks about water stains which would lead me to believe that tank in particular had been filled.

Just because I am blunt when people give false information or provide information based on ignorance does not mean that I am an antagonist. I prefer that people have the information to make their decisions rather than the possible falsehoods or myths that can get created too easily in this hobby.

If you'd like to discuss anything further with me, please take it to a personal message.
