Found a baby snapper at work, few pics.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It actually looks like it's been an indoor turtle for some time, that's maybe how/why you found it.It's suspiciously clean for a snapper it's size.
You will have fun feeding it though. They eat pretty much anything.

Thanks everyone...I will probably build a outdoor pond for it once it outgrows any take I get for it. I just built a 300gal for my RES and some Koi (see pond section)

Maybe the pics are tricking you...its not all that big...shell is 2~3". How big are they when they are born? It was covered in mud and I have given it the ol tooth brush treatment. Always wanted one but never got around to getting one.

Yep...it still wasnt to bad but better now for sure. I have been looking at it close...its clean as a whistle so far.

So how can I sex it? I want to make sure its M so I can keep the name.

Look on the bottom of the carapace. If it's concave it's a male. Males genreally have longer tails too. They're so cute when they're little. I love their faces!

Very nice find:D Miguel is going to love it. As if its a boy or a girl its really pretty much impossible to tell ,he´s/she´s to young. But if you plan to house him in a large outdoor pond it doesant mater. The problems ocurr when people have female turts indors and the turt produces eggs and has no place to lay them. Besides feeding him a good variety of animal food try to teach him to like leafy veggies like dandylions, turnip greens ,etc, so that he doesant refuse to eat them when hes grown up. That thing of snappers being 100% carnivores is a myth. In the wild they eat loots of aquatic plants. It has even been found that aligator snappers eat loots of haycorns:eek: Good luck with that litle critter:D

Nice find. Even the semi aquatic animals have pretty long strolls away from water, I found a newt that was about a mile away from the nearest water source.

I had read that they like some greens too. Thats the reason I threw some plants from the pond in there but he hasnt messed with that yet.

This guy is lucky....my office is right of a major super busy hwy. I am going to have to hunt around to see if there is a pond or ditch he came from....maybe theres more lol.
