Found a box turtle, dead? hibernating?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
looks like a dried up body. don't see any hint of a head even when tucked in.

Surprised none of the more knowledgable Herp guys haven't chimed in yet.

It doesn't smell yet and the legs don't feel dried out. It's been at ~65F for 2 days now and still looks like that, no changes at all. I think it's dead.

I left it for one more night. If it's still there and looks the same tomorrow I'll probably give up on it.

try to warm bin and add a little dixie cup with water, and put some straw in the bin. That got a turtle out of hibernation when I was younger

I'd go ahead and slowly warm him up. With herps, especially ones that can hibernate, they're not dead until they're warm and dead.

If he is alive, a room temperature soak with some carrot or squash baby food mixed in the water would help with rehydration and recovery.

It's dead. 4 days at 65+ temps and now it's starting to smell. Oh well. Maybe we'll find a live one sometime.
