Found a eye biter for $6 is this good?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
that is not off the chart for a retail price. The fish is not really a eye biter, Dimidochromis compressiceps (previous Haplochromis) preys on small mbuna of lake Malawi. It is not that aggressive usually and will eat small fish if it catches them. The males do get really nice and can demand a better price as a adult. Typically get 7-10" in size. Female a little smaller and stay silver with the black. If plan on breeding them, its better to have 2 or more females for a male to reduce aggression on a single female. A 50 gallon or bigger is better for these guys. Not picky eaters.

sorry i ddint mean to make you all mad, its just a very unsual fish around my area. no one ever keeps any carnivorous, or big fish out here so it was kinda odd. and NO i would not pay any price for a fish i thought was way to friggin high. i was just wondering like i said. i must have not been typing it right on yahoo to find prices. sorry to bug you all.

not trying to be mean, often people need someone to tell them that is a good deal, even if it is an okay or great price to be sure. i bring my wife a long often to have her talk me into it...just know that many guys get on here trying to come up with a reason to get a fish... and by saying the people on this website, who the other person thinks must know a lot, is like oh, well okay lets get it...

No I wasn't mad. Just somehow seeing posts that asking if something is a good price seems to rub my nerves. And just so you know if you want a good place to check prices (remember shipping must be added...) Go to aquabid.com

But yah asking if a 6 dollar fish is a good price when most african haps sell for easily 20 bucks... (Heck I don't even want to think about how much I have spent on the fish in my large tank...)

Anyways as said yes it is obviously a good deal.

The only place I have seen them where I can actually take it home with me is about 15-25 dollars. I have one LFS and one chain store in my area. All of my fish either arrive next day or I pick them up at the airport.

All of you people that have a ton of stores around that carry cheap fish have it good. But seriously 6 bucks... That is almost free out here.

nah that is a good price seriously
here they are like 25$ at that price in lfs but i have my colony and sell them different places

I'd say both genders get upwards of 11"-12" (7" is still sub-adult size) and a minimum 6ft tank for these guys.

I think the eye biter is gorgeous. i found one today about 2.5 inches long maybe longer im horrible at measurement for $6. he stood out amongst all the toher assorted african cichlids in the tank, being the only silver one with a long face and line down the side. i thought he was pretty. is that to much for one of these or is that pretty much the norm price for them? Thanks!

OK, after all this discussion on if the Dude was worth $6.
I want to see his picture!..... So we can can see if he is really gorgeous or not. :naughty::naughty::naughty::naughty: (just having fun!)

Enjoy your new purchase.

Dont take this the wrong way, but that fish gets much larger than 7 inches more like a min. of 10 inches (f) and def. needs a tank that's a 125gal or as long as a 125gal with enough width for it to turn. They aren't as agressive as they are made out to be, but mine did rip the eyes out of two of my smaller fish and It will pick on fish its size and smaller, in my experience with owning them. They are really cool fish though.
