Yep, gray rat.

Best let him go somewhere safe. They have good reason to be nippy... I wouldnt keep him as a pet (dont know if you plan to), there are so many alternitives.

Lucky find :) And good save
explain the nippy part, ive never kept that type.

It's a gray rat snake. Pretty little guy. The baby black rats around my house look just like it, but a different color.

how the hell did it get in your house... that should be a the question here.

When I lived with my parents we sometimes would get Eastern Milk Snakes in our screened in sunroom. I kept my iguana in there in the summer. I think the snakes, which do feed on lizards, smelled my iguana and squeezed inside to investigate the smell. I think they all were disappointed to find a 6 foot iguana and no food.

Well if you were a hatchling wild rat snake in a world full of cats, dogs, birds, foxes, bigger snakes, and worst of all HUMANS, youd be pretty darn nippy too.

I wish there were snakes crawling into my house! I've been buying them like a sucker :)

I've never caught one, they're way too fast!!!! Black rats get pretty big and are probably some of the most agile snakes I've ever seen. They do eat copperheads if that gives you any idea of how nippy they can be.

:D

Nice little guy. Should just put him out sooner rather than later if you aren't going to keep him. Wish I had some wandering about the place.

Yeah, it's a grey rat snake.
I spent forever where I used to live trying to find some and one crawls into your house? I hate you! j/k
Unfortunately when I found a place where they did reside (I was just observing, not catching them) they started working on the road there and I never saw them again. The road work included tearing up most of the land on each side, so I guess they destroyed a lot of their territory and the snakes moved much further into the woods.

BTW, it's really not hard for a snake to find their way into your house. For all you know you had several babies somewhere in your house. A lot of the time they get in through holes that mice make and stuff, otherwise they just find other open spaces. Not hard for something that slithers along that ground and spends their time looking for that kind of stuff.
