Actually, sometimes the people just don't know. They go in a store and see this cute Oscar. They don't know much so they rely upon the seller to give them some info.......next thing you know, the poor guy has just enough room to turn around. I am willing to bet that everyone on this board has made a mistake with either compatability, size or water quality. I hope you rescue him and let him now what "life" can really be like in a quality home.

PS: I will state that there are way too many people who buy a fish knowing full well they are housing incorrectly thinking "Bah...it's just a fish". Those people I would love to kick in the balls just once....maybe twice :irked:

If he's in NY... chances are more than likely a Petland Discounts. Which isn't all too bad if you can find one that has people that know what they are talking about.

I remember going to one for some feeders... guy saw some cute little buttikoferi cichlids and his daughter was saying how much she wanted one. The salesperson there was like nah they don't grow that large....... heh.

That's awesome...maybe they meant 500L instead of gallons? lol

Who whats to guess where he bought the oscar from??? hmmm, i'm guessing either Petco or Pertsmart.:)

you forgot to mention walmart where they sell those pacus that only grow 8-10 inches.

I just looked at the ebay post for the 20g long and Oscar. They are no longer selling the tank with the fish, they have a note on the bottom of the page saying that due to concerns of so many people the fish and tank must go separately.

At least they came around. That craigslist ad is brutal...I had two Oscars in a 55g, but as soon as I read more on this website I learned just how bad that was. I brought them to the LFS the next day, I couldn't stand to think of them being cramped in there. Just like someone else in this post mentioned, I got them from Petsmart. They told me you need 1 gallon per inch of fish and that I could have 5 Oscars give or take in a 55g. Luckily I only bought 2, imagine if I had gotten all 5! The two I had were about 8" when I brought them to a LFS.

The major reason for that is lack of knowledge. Thats what makes this website so great, I stumbled across this site by googling Oscar or cichlid, hopefully more people will stumble across this or other informational sites.
