Found out temperature for snake; how can I raise it?

dude just for you,Easy set up.See the heat pad and the heat lamp,if your using both i would use a low wat lamp but see at nite when you turn the lamp off,the pad will keep it warm over nite.You dont want to run your house heater all the time for the snake it will be cheaper to buy the pad.I place a flat thin peice of wood inside the tank above the pad for mine so they dont burn but thats just whats worked for me all these years.Now im posting the best pic ive ever drawn just for you so you better like it and if your at home rolling your eyes or laughing at me im gonna come get you,lol.You guys will love this.View attachment 171929better love it davo.

a heatmat on a thermostat will end your problems. You can put the thermostat end either in the cage over the heatmat (the hotspot), or attach it to the mat itself using electrical tape or something. Then you use the thermometer to find out the temp, and adjust the thermostat temp setting to what is needed (it won't be the temp you have selected on the thermostat necessarily). Easy.

Okay, I see. I guess I should put cardboard inside the tank, parallel to where the heat pad is so it won't burn on the snake. (Heat pads go on the side of the tank, correct?)

But why would I need a thermostat AND a heat pad? Won't a thermostat do? But anyway I will get a thermostat tommorow...the pet store closes in 15 minutes so yeah...

Oh, now I see that your drawing was from the side. I thought it was from the top before.

You said you put a piece of wood between the tank and the heat pad. Would a piece of cardboard work instead? That way, it won't burn my snake for sure, right?

I think I get the difference; thermometers measure the temperature, and thermostats raise the temperature. Also, where exactly does the thermostat go? Inside the tank?

DAVO!!!! explain the thermostat to him,i dont use them i only got the 2 tanks and i use a diferent method on both.I think what davo means is that it hooks up to your heat pad so you can control how hot it gets or if it overheats it will shut off.And i use a half inch thick flat square peice of wood about the same size as my heat pad.I place it insid the tank right above the heat pad wich is under the tank.The heat goes through the glass and warms up the wood and dosnt get as hot as it would if the snake were to lay right on the glass.This is for my large boa so just see what davo says about the thermostat.Some ppl use a large floor tile for the wood idea of mine.Its not as hard as its all sounding trust me.

3) put the heat mat under the tub/tank etc.
4) put the thermostat probe into the tub/tank on the hotspot, or alternatively attach it (I use electrical tape) to a bit of the heat pad sticking out from under the tub/tank.
5) find out the temperature of the hotspot (obv. this will be in the tank and over the top of the heat mat area)
6) lower or increase the control temp. on the thermostat to get it to the hot spot temperature you need... do this by checking the temp on your thermometer.
7) you're done, have a coffee and watch your "empty tank" because your snake is hiding in it's nice warm hide

Easy as I can explain. Oh and no need for wood etc. to be between the tank, the thermostat puts the temperature to the correct temp, so it doesn't fall to low, or get high enough to fry your animal. It should be at whatever you have set it to be.

Okay, thanks. But, I just thought of an idea that seems to be working great; use an insulator, like foam to cover most of the top. This keeps the tank tank at atleast 73 degrees, it works great. I can't believe I hadn't thought of this earlier. Now that I got this, is it necessary to get a thermostat?

Dude, you can't keep a corn snake permanently at 73 degrees.

The fact of the matter here is that you NEED a better heat source if you are going to keep your animal. A thermostat CONTROLS the temperature of whatever heat source you plug into it. Your corn snake will eventually die if you keep it at such a low temperature, and if you are unwilling to spend the money to set your snake up correctly, you should re-home it immediately.

Your insulation idea is a good one, however, insulation won't help you much if you don't have enough heat in the cage in the first place.
