found silicone that adhears to acrylic

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
here are the pics and after letting the silicone cure for a little more than 24 hours I had a very hard time removing it from the back of my tank and even when I did there was still some stuck to the acrylic.
What makes this silicone differnt is that it is made to stick these types of materials.

If it's 100% silicone like other products used for glass, why would it stick to acrylic any better? Either it is special silicone, it has something else added (which would make it less than 100% silicone) or it is no better than the other stuff.

This is made by GE, from what I've been able to find GE does not recommend or endorse any of their silicone sealants for immersion.

Does it matter? GE with bioseal is 100% silicone yet isn't the bioseal an additive?

In our last thread about the whole geII bing a complete myth thread. I beleive it was rivermud a member here that found a link to some info on the bio-seal in ge silicones and it turns out it is just a additive to the curing agent. And once fully cured it evaporates completely.

The whole bio-seal term was a ploy by the makers of silicone sealants (ge) to try and make there sealant look better than normal caulking to justify the price difference to the general public. As it turns out all 100% silicones will not grow molds and mildews just by its chemical makeup.

Thats why GE had to hurry and put trademark on the term bio-seal before the other silicone makers caught on.

BUT the myth about the bio-seal killing fish is sooooooo deep that you can't change many peoples minds about it no matter how much proof you show them.

I have 3 tanks with geII black silicone in them and have been fine for around 3-4 years.

my 125g tank has around 14 tubes of GEII in it. I used it to do a complete reseal and then used it to cover the bottom as a option to a bare bottom. And then used it to hold rock formations together. And then built a sump using GEII as well. It has been up and running for about 1.5 years and has a shoal of yellow tail barracuda's in it doing fine.

all I can tell you guys is it seems to work for me on MY acrylic tank and on the acrylic that I uesd to build my sump. It seems to have bonded hard enough that I have a very hard time removing it. I dunno if it will last for years but i think trying some thing is better than saying well other kinds wont work so this probably won't either.
Last night I was googling about it and found that on a planted tank forum they suggested using it and someone had a thread saying it worked for them too.
