Whilst popping into one on my local fish shops I saw what looked to be a red jack Dempsey. It was red with blue spangles.

It seemed a nice alert fish and I was wondering what the going rate for one of these are? As the guys in the shop didn't know what it was as they thought it was a blue arcara and are open to offers.

Call me crazy, but it looks like a washed out normal male JD to me. The light substrate a lack of cover might be the reason. I guess it's possible it is a platinum JD (I don't know much about the fancy varieties), but I don't see anything that would lead me to suspect it is a hybrid. JD's have spangles on their sides, and there is nothing particularly unusual about the pattern on this one.

Colors vary with mood and status. Below are two photos of the same JD. The upper image shows him in normal colors, and the lower image shows him in submissive colors after losing dominance to a blackbelt. His colors returned after a few days.

Looks like a standard JD to me. It looks very stressed and washed out, giving its pigmentation the appearance of light pink/red. Nothing unusual here.

I agree, I think it's a normal JD. I had one that looked just like that when he wasn't colored up.

I've heard of red JD's but didn't think they were commonly collected yet and available to the hobby mainstream yet. Cool find if they are infact reds.

Scratch that sorry guys, just did some talking and I'm sure these are just reg JD's. Color matches and spangling on red jacks isn't even close to what is seen on this beautiful jack posted here. My bad! Happy fish keeping!
