i have kept freshwater tanks for 4 years now and im at the point where my fish do real well. i have an empty 55 gallon and was thinking of a FOWLR setup with:

1 Volitan Lionfish
2 Coral beauty angelfish
1 Tiger jawfish

i was thinking of a marineland c-360 canister filter for filtration
with a protein skimmer (seaclone)

i was thinking about 60lbs of live rock
let me know what you think

you may find that the seaclone skimmer is very inefficient. They are not all that effective in removing waste from the water. the canister is fine, but you will also see that it will cause a huge increase in nitrate the longer the tank has been setup. Hang ons may be the best way, but can still increase your nitrate production. the key is keeping them clean.

otherwise the selection seems fine. the volitan may get a little large for that tank so maybe get a dwarf or two. Check on the max size of the species before purchase.

I would ditch the canister and setup a sump with a good protein skimmer (not a seaclone). I also would not pick a volitan lionfish they can grow up to 15". I personally have seen very many that are well over 12" long and have a huge wing span ( i guess it should be fin span). I would into a dwarf lionfish. like a fuzzy lionfish, zebra lionfish, or antennata lionfish. Also angel fish tend to be nippers when it comes to the lionfish's fins. So I would not mix the two. Also the volitan would eat the angels. Also add a couple powerheads for extra flow through and around the liverock.

I agrree w/ welsher about the angel....... especially with the volitan their wingspand is hugeeeeeee!!!!!!! get a fuzzy dwarf theyre cool

1 Volitan Lionfish <<Not in a 55....minimum of a 2 foot wide tank...100 gallon or more..They get very large>>
2 Coral beauty angelfish <<Would only add one, aggression will occur with two>>
1 Tiger jawfish <<Not in an agressive tank, this is a very passive fish>>

<<Dont see any probs with the cannister filter...Seaclone, junk...Get a good Deltec, CSS or Remora>>

Added some comments above, in Red....

instead of the angels would you suggest maybe a picasso triggerfish or a tang?

A couple of good suggestions there....

I wouldn't suggest a tang for a tank that has a 48x12 footprint. Triggers are also known to be lionfish killers. They bite off the spines and stress the lionfish to death. I believe that trigger will get to large for 55g tank.

Bluchin Triggers, pinktail Triggers, and Niger Triggers won't mess with a Lionfish. Bluechins don't get that large compared to alot of triggers.

i wouldn't do a tang either. It has been done before but usually not a good idea. They are active fish and should have ample swimming room so they don't feel constricted. Well established tanks also help due to the sensitivity to the fish, this can be stressful for the inhabitant sitting through the cycle of the tank.

thanks for all the help

i have one last question before i finalize my plan.

i have heard that if youre keeping a FOWLR tank that you dont have to cure the live rock and sand. is this true?
