so im just starting up a 75 gallon reef tank and considering a foxface as my first fish and ive got a few questions

1st. how often and what do you feed them
2nd. ive heard theyre reefsafe if you keep them well fed is this true?

thanks in advance

i feed mine a varied diet including flakes (prime reef/algae), pellet (nls), frozen mysis, chuncked up shrimp and krill, and of course a lot of algae sheets.

as far as in a reef mine is mixed with various softies including mushrooms, zoes, toadstool, colt, etc and i've never had a problem with it messing with anything. at least not noticeably anyway

Is the tank cycled? Foxface are pretty sturdy, but they arent damselfish tough. They are mostly veggievores, but soon after arriving in captivity they will be right there begging with everyone else at the feed ring for whatever your putting in. The nice bonus of foxface is they are a visual indicator of how the tank is doing. If they are in stress color/pattern and they didnt just wake up then something is wrong and its time to play detective. Great fish that does well in most set ups.

Sorry been busy and am just checking back. If you have hair algae on your rocks dont give the rabbit anything else until its gone. Otherwise pick up some sushi nori at an asian market and feed it to him on a clip a couple of times a day. They need to graze like most vegitarian animals.

They're grazers... they may nip at your corals, it's not intentional, it's just them looking for food...

They are primarily herbivorous, like tangs. a diet rich in nori, spirulina, and any fresh macro algae you can provide, supplemented with a little meaty foods is ideal. Once daily feedings should be fine, as I said, they're grazers and will pick at your rock throughout the day.

Watch out for their dorsal fins when handling them, they are venomous and, IMHO, deliver a much more painful sting than lionfish...

I am scared of getting stung by mine, putting a algae sheet into the tank can be tough, as soon as I go near the top of the tank he follows my hand. I have to time it and quickly put my hand in clip the algae sheet onto the feeding clip.

Its an definitely a challenge. :)

i have 3 in reef tank they are big eaters and lose weight if not fed enough , i feed mine 2 a day. they love spinich allso shrimp, nori, i hand feed mine never been stung thats not to say it cant happen

i have watched these guys munch on sps corals and litterally take chunks out. they would then spit it out in a dust, so definately add w/ caution.
