At the LFS most of the live corals that are for sale are attached to large pieces if rock out of well established tanks. When you buy a coral it isn't all about the coral it is also about what creatures you get with your rock. So far I have gotten 3 serpent star fish, a long spine urchin, nudibranch, abalone snails, other types of corals, emerald mithrax crabs and the list goes on. It sounds like you are talking about the Asterina Star fish. They sell them on EBAY for about $20 for five. So I bought some live rock the other day and put it in my saltwater tank.
Looks like there was a starfish in the rock.

my first experiance with live rock was the same almost freaked when worms started to crawl out cool stuff

just make sure you id the star, down the road it might become a problem depending on the SW setup.
