Free tank!!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I love free stuff. Irresponsible quitter fishkeepers are great!

There is only one coral in there, the other is Fiji Rock. Not sure if I spelled that correctly or not. There is one clownfish and one coral banded shrimp. What else can I put in this tank? She gave me some food, it is Spirulina Tropical Flakes. I put some in tonight and the clownfish gobbled it right up. What does the shrimp eat? Does it just forage the bottom or is there something specific I should buy to feed him? I love the look of this tank. She really got laxed in cleaning it so I brought it home and cleaned off all the algae on the filters and it looks great. Oh yeah, there are baby starfish in there, she said she didnt put them in there. Where would they have come from?
Thanks guys for all the info. I pray I can do this.

The stars are the aesternia? http://www.wetwebmedia.com/asterinafaqs.htm If so they'll eat your coraline algae. The Fiji is a reference to the location where the live rock came from the Fiji Islands. The shrimp will eat left over fish food or you can target feed it small bits of shrimp or fish. Mine will even eat out of my hand ,"took it a while to chill".

You might consider giving your clown a bit broader diet they tend to do much better on frozen foods vs the dried ones and give it a varied diet. You can add other small fish like fire fish, cardinals, gobies ,"neons are cool they'll spawn in your tank maybe" you should also consider adding some more clean up critters like snails, red legged reef crabs ,"stay away from the blue legs they tend to be little jerks." maybe some serphant stars after you get some practice at keeping your water stable.

I'd worry more about being able to keep my tank stable than adding fish at this point. You'll need to maintain sg of 1.22 and 1.26 ph 8 and kh of 8-12 if you want to grow coral and keep your inverts happy. What sort of coral is it ?

thanks for the great info. I will get the water stabilized first before adding any more fish. Just wanted to know what would go good with the ones I already have. Thanks again. I dont know what kind of coral it is. I will do some checking and get back to you.

Yeah, it is over the life of the tank. She gave me the journal she kept on what all has been put in the tank and it adds up to about 3,000 dollars. I lost my coral banded shrimp last night. It must have been from the move. Well, I will get this tank stabilized and get another one.

After careful looking and getting this tank set up I realized there was an undergravel filter in it. I personally dont use UGF's because they are worthless. So I went to my lfs and asked the owner what she would do in my situation. And she said she would take it out. Well, I got home and started to clean everything out. She had about 4" of crushed coral in that tank as her subtrate. I took almost all of it out and only have about 1" of subtrate in there now. But while I was cleaning the bottom of the tank it looked like mud when I was cleaning the coral. This tank obviously hasn't been cleaned in a long time. So I took it all out and am starting anew. The only fish that is in there, is a clownfish. I hope everything clears up soon and balances out so I can get another shrimp and some more snails and such.

Well, so far so good. I have been able to keep the tank stabilized since I got it. I really enjoy watching the clown fish. My son has named him "Nemo" Quite original, I know.
I think maybe in a week or two I will go get some shrimp, crabs, and snails to help keep the tank clean. I might even get another fish. Anymore suggestions on what fish to put in there with the clown?
