"Another aspect that makes identification of species difficult is the fact that parrotfish undergo drastic color changes as they mature. This marked change in color and pattern follows the same design seen in the wrasse family. Juveniles display one particular color pattern that changes as the fish matures to its initial phase and then again into the terminal phase. The initial phase includes mature females as well as mature and immature males. The terminal phase includes only mature males. Terminal males are produced through a sex change from a female to a male. Size determines the pecking order among parrotfish groups and only the largest initial phase fish will change into terminal males."
