Freezing fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
All I want to know is what happens to the fish when put in the freezer alive to cause it so much pain before death! I think I remember reading some sort of cells explode and its extremely painful. I just want to prove someone wrong.

If memory serves me right I'm pretty sure the same thing that happens to us (hypothermia) happens to fish on a smaller level but slightly different as we are endothermic and they are ectothermic. Core temperature drops below desired levels, blood starts leaving extremities( how frostbite happens) to the try to protect core, depression, confusion, extreme pain, the feeling of burning from expanding cells(which is why most people found dead from freezing are naked), then unconscious, then death. It is not a good way to go for any creature and it is not humane.

Boiling is one of the worst ways to euthanize a fish, not recommended as a humane way of euthanasia.

Freezing is fine provided the fish cannot come into contact with the ice. Ice crystals forming on the fish can cause undue stress.

My self I usually go with a solid whack to the head, kills most instantly.

+1 horrible for us instant painless for the fish :(
