Fresh and Saltwater Rod and Reel?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
personally i don't like combo r&r i have never had a good experience with the rods (i have has 1 snap half way down the top section and two snap where the rod meets the cork) so now i just spend a little more and buy exactly what i want

u don't need a special salt water reel, u just need to soak it for a day in a bucket of tap water after u are done fishing.

I know what you mean, But the Shakespeare stuff has proven good to me and even comes with a decent line. Most combos come with junk line by mine came with Stren...

They are the exact same other then length so if you are gonna do strictly salt prob the 8 but if you wanna play in fresh get the 7ft... It really doesn't matter either way

Ill probably only use it in fresh a handful of times, and salt, a few times a year. Would picking up a 20 dollar 7' shakespeare at walmart work. Then I can use it in fresh and try out salt, if I enjoy it, I can pick up a nicer rod and reel. If I were to hook a 5' shark or 40 pound ray, both of which have been caught surf fishing on the beach I go to, would the rod be in danger of snapping.

a 5' shark or 40lb ray would need a heavy action rod and heavyier line. The 20 setup from walmart woun't be able to do that. I have a 7'6" Abu Garcia Rod with medium heavy action with a Hurricna Kobia reel w/ 17lb line and I'd be afraid of my rod breaking if I caught a 5 ft shark...

But you can go surf fishing with a $20 rod/reel. You just won't be snagging those.. Plus the line will break before the rod does

Thanks, I dont want to hook one, the most common catches are dinner plate sized rays and 12 inch sharks. I really just want to catch flounder and fish under 2 feet. Im just afraid ill hook one. I just use small fish I catch in a cast new for bait, with a sink and hook. Then just slowly reel it in. Is that right?

It kinda depends on the type of fish you are going for. I don't really do a lot of surf fishing but I pier fish and do well getting flounder with live shrimp

Ok thanks, yeah, since Im not planning on eating what I catch, I fine catching pretty much anything. Is there a good general way to fish. I more used to fresh water.
