So I just got back from the fish store and safeway.. I picked up four feeder fish, chicken liver, and gizzards. All together costed me about 3-4 bucks. I wonder how fast this food will go with my 1 sanchezi that I ordered..

Anyone else know of cheap fresh foods to feed? I use to feed my reds beef heart and shrimp, but shrimp these days are like 20 bucks. :(

Im sure there are other food threads, but keep this to fresh meats good for piranhas, and possibly any other comments regarding foods.

Thanks MFK.

what I find to be really good for them and cheap you can find at most grocery stores. fish meat, of most kidns you can get bags of smelt for a good price. also if you ask them at the seafood station if u come at a good time they soemtimes have scraps of halibet ect that ar eperfectly good jsut not premium cuts they cna use for free . also good ones are raw shrip, prawns(good for color), nite crawlers like alrge earthworms are good. just mix up the diet. most of thses are high in protein and low if fat soit better for them, not like beef heart and red meats ect.

Thanks for the response. Ya I was at the meat department, I will stop by when im close to running out of the meat I bought.. Maybe I can come by whenever can get scraps.. I also would like to try fish meat. Thanks again.

no prob, theres lots of good stuff for them at the market. I work in a lfs anf i dotn even buy my food there haha.

no sure if other do what i do but i never feed my piranha oily food or any meat. When it come to food you want good food for them and keep them good health. All the food you mention i would not feed it to my piranha. but that just me. there is so many healthy diet out there that you can feed to them.

Weightwatchers? May I ask what you feed your piranhas? If not meats, than what?

well everyone has different way to raise and feed they piranha...so there is no right or wrong food. but if you ask me what i feed my piranha then here is what i feed them.

markey raw shrimp, silver side, smelt, scallop, pallets, worm, frozen food, fish fillet (no salmon) any others that is not oily diet. I also stay away from feeder live fish. catfish meat is best as well.

I thought you didnt feed meat? Thats a good diet. Once my sanchezi starts eating I will pick up some white meat.. But she is being a baby..

Ever tried nuts or anything, says in the wild they will eat those off trees and such..

wild and home captive are different....wild they have no choice of diet, they eat what ever they can to service, even they own kind believe it for not. no i have never try nut or veg..although i know some others has try it.

I havent tried neither.. When I had a group of reds I only fed shrimp when they were adults.. Shrimp is like over 20 bucks a bag at safeway, I can't afford that... What do you think the cheapest white foods are? I got gizzards and chicken liver for 1.50 each.
