I like salt better for the much much wider variety of creatures you can buy as well as the better color. 
They both have their positives. Fresh is easier to maintain, but salt is more interesting, depending on what you stock.
from keeping several fresh and salt tanks, i have found that saltwater fish have more interesting "personality" and more intricate behavior than fresh water fish, corals are much more colorful and interactive than plants too. but freshwater is cheaper, and you get to build cool planted community tanks though...

I love the price of freshwater.
Plus the ease of water changes, the fact that most fish will breed under correct care, the ability to keep planted tanks (yes i realize there are saltwater plants...), and i just like the fish better.

I don't expect anyone to say they've never done fresh and went straight to salt... thats a bit much lol
