Fresh Start with 2 Tanks!

I vote for turning your 55 into a sump and going marine. A lot more interesting and a lot more you can do with it. For the sump you can get a mantas shrimp. They are not as difficult as people make it seem. Call your friend and tell him to set up your 125 and start to cycle it. Then when you get home throw a hang on back overflow and you are good to go.

If you don't like the marine idea go native. Maybe smuggle or pay an Afgani to mail some natives from there for you.

Haha yeah, I don't want to have anything to do with this country once I leave!

From what I understand, the amount of filtering required really depends on the water parameters, which is driven by stocking/feeding. So, correct me if I'm wrong, but I could go ahead with the canister filters, (cycle the tank obviously) and start with a relatively light stock and sort of see how my water parameters work out, and eventually add more fish until it's reached a decent balance? (taking into account that the fish are going to get much bigger)

That can be done. But from experience it can be a pain to change filters around once a tank is full of water and fish. As for recommendations for the 125 I say geos with some tetras. And 55 I would do riparium

You got it. But an fx5 is rated for 400gallons. It will be able to handle your 125 no problem. I had one on my 140. As I do a 50% water change every 2 weeks

Thanks again guys!

I think I'm going to stick with the freshwater thing for a while longer. With my 125 I'll probably go ahead and get a fx6 and move my marineland emperor to it as well. Then with my 55, I'll probably grab a fluval 406 and go with that.

As far as stocking goes, I've always wanted an electric blue jack dempsey. From what I understand, my 55 would pretty much be the minimum size tank to keep one in, however if I go that route, would there be any other fish I could keep with it (cichlids or otherwise)? And if I went with my 125, I know I could have some more SA cichlids, but probably none of the larger more aggressive ones, like a red devil, correct?

Thank you for your service, as for fish you could also look at African Cichlids all kinds of options.
