Wow this thread is giving me hopes of making my own saltwater tank one day. Basically all I need for a fish only salt tank is sand, salt, and a protein skimmer. It gets more difficult when you add corals and other plants. I can probably do a pretty nice salt water tank for $200.
I didn't say that lol most sw people do water changes but less frequent than our monster fw tanks with huge fish. The poster above who only tops off for water changes is certainly not the norm. Check out reef central and search some posts on water changes that forum is big and has alot of good info.
You could probably buy a used small setup with $200 but realistically you will spend more... Just keeping it real.
yeah i thought about that, its true i will probably be spending closer to $500 and hey you make me look like the poster who does changes once every few months.....
If you are new to saltwater, water changes is a must until you are more familiar with how your saltwater setup works. In my opinion, with my experience anyways, key components to good water quality for saltwater fish is a good protein skimmer, deep sand beds 4"+, and 2lbs of live rock per gallon of water. For corals, thats a whole different story...learn to walk before running. =)
Can't beat the color on saltwater fish and the saltwater angels are incredible. But I like my freshwater setup but do enjoy brousing all the saltwater setups at my lfs. The thing with me is I would want a 1000 gallon saltwater setup so I leave the salts at the store.
Just a standard 100g 60x18x20T. My inside space was smaller though cause this TruVu tank had a built-in sump that ran along the back. Nitrates were never a problem in my tank. I had a huge custom made protein skimmer stood 5ft tall from the floor.
oh gosh. Well if you guys follow any of my other threads you'll know I'm in the middle of setting up a fish room for purpose of breeding african cichlids. When I finish work on that and the rest of my basement I might have to allocate some money to salt water.
you can find incredible used deals from your local reef forum, this is a good deal that i just saw and thinking of getting to start a small lps reef tank
