FRESH WATER TO SALT WATER CONVERSION.... FIRST TIME MARINE

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
x2.

Get a protein skimmer, 30 lbs. of plain aragonite sand, 55+ lbs. of rock (mostly dry with some live for seeding), a hydrometer, some powerheads, & a decent salt mix (Instant Ocean, Coralife, etc.), and you should be good to go once you cycle the aquarium.

+3 here... start minimalist and stock gently. You'll find you get addicted quickly, and can get into the more complex systems from there.

Hey guys Thanks for all the help. I feel like this is something that I can now do.

I was just wondering if it is better to put the sand in and then fill it with water and let the tank run for a few days before putting the rock in?

insert egg crate on the bottom, fill with 2-4" of sand, add your rock, fill with RO/DI water (you can use treated tap - but your diatom bloom might be longer). then add salt. no lights. cycle for a few weeks. boring but easy.

it takes awhile to get the salts tanks setup and running, but once they do, it's pretty easy/basic.

Update and some help:
I cleaned out my tank and filled it with salt water and added 45lbs of live rock from Live Aquaria. Its been running for about two weeks. So I decided today to take a bottle of water to my LFS to see if I was doing it correct and on track. I was shocked when he told me that I should have added a hardy fish to cycle my tank and that all of my live rock should be dead? He told me to keep doing water changes for about a month and then come back. What do you guys think? and what about my live rock? Please HELP!!!

He probably means die off. All LR that gets shipped has some "die off" that happens. Its BB that dies during shipment. This is actually enough to cycle a tank. The BB dies and creates ammonia which starts the cycle. This is completely normal. And yes, you can add a hardy fish to keep the cycle going. Like a damsel.

Yes you can use hermit crabs but a lot of people don't because they can be a neusiance after the cycle is over. Yes, keep doing your wc's weekly. 10% to 15% should be good enough. When you cycle your tank with LR it can take a significantly shorter amount of time to cycle. (About 2 weeks instead of 6 weeks with dry rock)
