an lfs near me has a small ray for $40. they dont even know what kind it is...big help. i did some research and i think it is a freshwater atlantic ray. i would really like to try and raise it, but i know nothing about rays. if you guys have any first hand experiance w/ this type of ray, could you give me some advice? thanks

I had one for a long time. They are great! Kind of plain but very active. Do your research it can only help you. Mine liked a temp. of 80 to 82. He would eat just about anything I put in there, pellets ghost shrimp, bloodworms, beefheart, etc. They get big too. What size tank do you have? What tankmates will it have? Great starter ray! He was my first ray.:grinno:

We have a 150 gal that is 5x2x2. His tankmates would be our 16" Florida Gar. He is very non-aggressive. How big do they get?

I CURRENTLY HAVE ONE AND I MUST SAY IT IS VERY HARDY. ITS A BEAUTIFUL RAY. THE ONLY DOWNFALL IS IT WAS WILDCAUGHT SO IT IS ONLY EATING GHOST SHRIMP. I AM SLOWLY TRYING TO GET IT TO EAT NIGHTCRAWLERS.

how big should i expect it to get and do feel $40.00 is reasonable?

YES I THINK $40.00 IS REASONABLE. I PAID $125.00 FOR MINE HE WAS 7 INCHES ACROSS. MALES WILL GROW TO BE ABOUT 13 INCHES AND FEMALES WILL GET A LITTLE LARGER ABOUT 16 INCHES ACROSS.

i may go have them order it then tomorrow! it sounds like a great specimen to add to my tank. they are freshwater not brackish right? although i would imagine they could be brackish...but my tank is freshwater. i googled them but i like to have peoples advice that have actually taken care of the fish. when i get it i will post pics to make sure it is even an atlantic ray. def. looks like one though.

well i just went to the lfs and the ray they had there was ordered in for someone else. i talked to them and they said for them to order in another was going to be over a hundred dollars. so i told them i will buy it right now for the $40 they had listed. she said it was reserved. laughingly i said "well, just tell him it died" and she said ok, and sold it to me. i have a few pics of it. could you guys id it for certain and give me some care tips. thanks alot!

im not sure how that ray will like that substrate... I'd get some sand in there or go bare bottom immediately or you're gonna have frustrated ray with a red belly.
