Why are you so set on adding invertebrates to this tank? You have been told that your RTC is not a suitable tankmate. You can try what you want, but its probably not going to work.

Asian clams are probably the easiest to keep and in many areas the only ones you can legally get. Most native clams will be protected and much harder to keep. Asian clams do well in unfiltered aquariums, they feed on detritus and the small organisms that live in the detritus. I'm not sure if a pleco would mess with them or not, most clams stay buried in the sand and would have to be dug up for a fish to get at them. most fish would probably just swallow the small clams whole. Crayfish will sometimes worry them to death.
