I just saw some freshwater filtering clams at my lfs how big do they grow and what are their requirements?

size: 2"
pH: 6.5-8.0
Temp: 65-85F
KH: 8-10
gret filter feeders.

Make sure your water has plenty of calcium.

wow. never heard that. please, someone confirm or deny this statement!!

nope, they are filter feeders. they eat organics out of the water

The most commonly available FW clam is the asian clam (Corbicula fluminea) which can grow to 2" across. Great filter feeder. But, does produce young that parasitize the gills of fish. Usually, the fish will do OK until the young clams mature and drop off. However, stressed fish (poor nutrition and/or poor water quality) may suffer from the addition of clinging juvie clams.
