These fellas can reach around a foot and a half in body length and 3 feet in leg span. The "robber crab" is so named because of its "propensity to steal shiny items like pots and silverware from houses". As a sort of massive hermit "crab" (juveniles still use seashells or broken coconut pieces), its not a true crab at all but rather an Anomuran.
lol those pinchers must REALLY REALLY HURT!! lol man it would be cool tho to keep 1 of these guys but not a chance in my house....it might get lose and take my silverware and pots xD i need them to eat and cook in
I found a site once where someone was keeping them as pets. They had a collection of all the molts up to the adult size. They had kept it as a pet for over 8 years if I remember correctly.
unfortunately very few crabs in the hobby are true aquatic FW crabs, the majority are amphibious BW crabs. i know an invert expert, i'll ask her and get back to you.

I've caught swimming crabs in freshwater that were more than 14" across. They are land locked blue crabs that live in a coal power plants cooling lake. they come in through the intake as larvae and grow huge because the fresh water causes them to swell up much bigger than normal when they molt. very mean customers, pinch you very bad. eat rather big fish if they can corner them. they make great crab chowder
