Any medium to Large river connected to (or in the historical flood plain of) the Mississippi, Missouri, and Ohio river watersheds..They are also common in the Lake Erie to St. Lawrence drainage. Inland populations are spotty but do exist.

They live near me, in Cayuga lake NY, I catch some from time to time. Probably one of my favorite natives, very interesting.

I catch them from time to time on the MN river. Interesting fish.
