Been raising 4 (10"-18") Polyuranodons for the last 6-8 months. As everyone knows, it's essential to keep a tight tank cover while covering ALL holes. I thought I did a great job with weights and used rolled up pieces of silicone to snugly cover up these holes. Apparently I suck!

At 6:20am this Saturaday, as I was getting ready for work, I noticed a long dark piece of brown stuff on the floor behind my aquarium. Damn! It looked like it was probably out for a long time! I had 10min before being late for work, so I grabbed some gloves, I picked it up and decided to place it in my room temperature (65F) bucket of water leftover from my water change the day before. After 5 minutes, I noticed a subtle twinge of it's neck. I picked it up and noticed its typical deep breathing. Placed it back into the tank, it started moving its whole body, and latched onto one of my pvc pipes. It's whole body (except it's face) is covered in white layer of damaged slime coat. It was my 2nd largest eel, 2nd favorite. Breathing well, I went to work.

They're known as escape artist. Trust me that's nothing coming home to a 4 foot moray eel on the ground is worse...

i lost one of mine that way, got out of a hole o thought i covered well, now i've full covered every single possible exit no matter how small it is to avoid any more escapes...

^ you got lucky which is great to hear... And definitely lesson learned...

Hopefully this helps someone else out, b4 the "corspe" gets flushed.
You should just title this thread "Eel Owners" in general....I have Gymnothorax tiles and I worry about the same thing, I have a friend who lost a SW Snowflake the same way, even got a friend who lost a Bichir like that.......

Any eel or eel-like fish owner should be concerned about this stuff happening. Having a Mod change the title might draw much more people in and be more helpful in the long run. Great thread though, I like it, but don't like hearing about escapees. Now I'm paranoid cuz I secured my tank w/ plexiglass and snake-clips, but there might be more holes lol

Definitely always put them back in water upon finding them! Bichirs do the same thing with the slime coat - good to hear yours is fine.

Yeah..I realized this is "escaping" is common with the moray species in general. After this, I was reading all the SW forums about this problem, some survived 8hrs+ out of water, dried up too. Crazy! Homer bro, not trying to rub salt on your loss, but did you attempt to rehydrate your eel b4 you tossed it?
