Freshwater flounder tips

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There are true freshwater flounders (I've had one before and was said to be an Amazon flounder). These true freshwater types are generally much more expensive and if you grow them out to their full extent, they'll get to 5-8". The brackish flounders grown in a freshwater aquarium will only get to about 3". These measurements are guesstimates from what I can remember.

Yeah never came across a full f/w flounder so maybe its possible the OP has one that is able to handle fresh?

Bracking flounders are the once you see for sale the most. Freshwater ones are usually more expensive.
In any case, these guys should be kept by themselves or with slow moving fish. I kept mine in 1010-1014sg and fed frozen blood worms. they grew to about 5inches and even started taking broken carnivor pellets.
The key is to make sure they get enough food. This guys are very slow and shy. They wont chase down food and can easiliy starve

I had 2 of these in my 46 gal BF for close to 4 years, and they did fine. I bought them online as FW flounders (they were not real expensive), and kept them in FW. Mine were about an inch when I got them, and they grew to close to 4". I recently gave them away to a friend, who says they are doing fine. I had gravel as a cover, and they were constantly out and about, sometimes flattened against the front glass. They are very slow feeders, so you do need to make sure there is enough food for them. I would get more in a heartbeat if our petco/smart carried them. Good luck.

Thx.... Ill try to get a pic up soon. Not sure about the brakish but i guess ill find out soon. Not eating i tried crushed pellets, flakes and black worms. Anyone know what i should do?

Mine handled fresh, what is the exact name of the flounder(please don't say freshwater flounder because lots of brackish species are named that too)?

If you do decide to get one you muct keep it in brackish water. I'd say 25-30 gallon minimum. They can go with pretty much any other non aggressive brackish fish such as mollies and bumblebee gobies. I currently have mine with 2 bumblebee gobies and they get along fine.

They love bloodworms, it takes time for them too eat. Don't house it with aggressive feeders or it won't have anything to eat because they are VERY slow eaters and by the time they realize the food is there, slowly move over to it, and slowly eat it the food will be all gone.

Dont house with aggressive feeders tho b/c as I said in my earlier post they won't get enough to eat. I disagree with 25 gallon min., they don't move much so I'd say 15 gallon minimum.
