those are some nice fish-----------do they have to have sand bottoms.

I have my flounder in freshwater. He eats anything that hits bottom, but he started out on bloodworms and shrimp.

What species is he and how big? How long have you had him? I know, I'm nosey but I am gathering as much info as I can about them.

never personally kept flounder but have maintained them at work. i notice a high fatality rate in the typical size fw flounder (1-2 in.) when kept in regular freshwater (then again they have mostly been in cental sump systems so who knows). i hear they thrive in brackish water, with a slightly higher temp (guessing around 82-85) with plenty of oxygenation.

They do better in slightly brackish water, in the wild the adults live in full salt, the young ride the tides up stream from the sound into freshwater. Grow out on freshwater foods then go back to the sea to grow to adulthood and reproduce. I've seen the adults swept up by shrimpers, they are 10" long+ and have markings like tire tracks across their backs. They can survive rather warm water but are mostly found in water from mid 60's to high 70's, low 80's would be in mid summer in shallow water. Normally they wouldn't linger in such hot water all the time. So far I've managed to raise them from larvae with eyes on opposite sides of their heads to 10" adults. Once they mature lack of salt water will kill them.
