Freshwater Hermitcrab?

It was a suprise to me as well, and took some looking to find.

Guppy, that was a new one on me I didn't even know that there was one species of f.w. hermit. I'd imagine that the ones on vanuatu survive because it's a coral atol and the alk is really high. I did know about a couple of brakish species but, they tend to do much better in higher salinity water. I'd say that your little bro gave you a case of mistaken identity like a crayfish etc hiding out in a snail shell.

That might be it but he says it was moveing around like that so I'm confused.
 
I understand that this is an old thread, but I felt I should defend the much-maligned brother who saw the "hermit crab". It is possible that what he saw was a caddisfly larva. These caterpillar-like aquatic insects construct cases around themselves with gravel, sand, twigs, or leaves, depending on species and available materials. A few, such as Helicopsyche, even build shell-shaped cases. Only the insect's head and limbs protrude from the case. It might look like a hermit crab to someone who hasn't seen a caddisfly before.
