Exactly where did the original sighting take place?

Concerning coconut crab distribution, I believe this map is mostly accurate:

This Anomuran may attain truly immense sizes.
He found it at Okachee (might be spelled wrong) Lake in Wisconsin. He said it was crawing around on the bottom of the lake in shallow water and when he pulled it out of the water there where legs and eyes in side of a shell. I wasn't with him so I couldn't conferm if it was a hermit crap. Thanks for all the help guys.

There are no native US FW hermits

i work at petsmart and we sell hermit crabs that live on land with now water except for drinking.
that's sad... they need a bowl of FW and a bowl of SW to soak their gills in.

Guppy, that was a new one on me I didn't even know that there was one species of f.w. hermit. I'd imagine that the ones on vanuatu survive because it's a coral atol and the alk is really high. I did know about a couple of brakish species but, they tend to do much better in higher salinity water. I'd say that your little bro gave you a case of mistaken identity like a crayfish etc hiding out in a snail shell.
Cheers
Max
