Freshwater jellyfish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They seem to be a zoological anomaly as they appear randomly in fresh water sources. I have never heard of them being kept in captivity. Other members may know more about them.

Ya Freshwater jelly fish (Craspedacusta sowerbyi) do exist

It would be extremely hard to care for them though
because you would need a special current tank.

But i have seen it done in a home aquarium

We have them in 5 or 6 lakes in Indiana. Supposedly the water has to be exceptionally clean, not sure if they've ever been kept in captivity

You can get freshwater hydras fairly easy...they are a cnidarian, related to the jelly fish. Although, you can hardly see them, and need to feed them daphnia haha ;)

I've kept the medusa stage a couple times. I've been trying to find another nearby bloom of them to try and get the polyp stage as well and attempt to keep them longterm. I've heard people say it's impossible to keep them for more than a few days, but I kept 3 in a 10 gallon feeding on newly hatched brine shrimp for over a month. They aren't very long lived and without polyps to reproduce, the medusa just die off.

So from what I understand there is just one species Craspedacusta sowerbyi and they don't get bigger then a penny size, extremly hard to aquire and keep since they need super clean water, and they need a special diet? Did I about cover it? Is there maybe someone with more specific info on where can they be found, is it like just one spot in the world or could they be cought in almost any body of freshwater? And also on water temp, turnover rate, current and possible diets? I understand that the water current is important in keeping jellyfish
Cuz this looks really cool :D
