Mine utilized a cave 99.9% of the time. The only time he moved generally was to eat. But I did keep him with other oddball predators that were a bit more active so he was still a cool and interesting addition to the tank. I've never kept any of the south American wolf fish but I imagine it's probably a pretty similar experience. I personally enjoyed having him, but I love frogfish and scorpion fish too so I guess it's a matter of what you like as a keeper.
