Is it ugly? Mine is. It is in freshwater with a salt regimine.1tbs/5g. They are very voracious and I feed mine live nightcrawlers twice its length!! When they get irritated or threatened, apart from the sting, they make a very loud and persistant noise.Weird. It sounds like rubbing a clean finger on glass...thats the best I can discribe it. Weird.
Anyway, they are cool fish and they WILL sting you if the have to as well as your fish.
If this is in fact the same fish.

i herd this the other day...i was getting some feeders out of its tank and it made that nosie...i was like "what the sh#t"...then it did it again and i saw it open its mouth to make the nosie...wet fingers on glass is the best discription...if your hand is in the water you can feel the vibrations also...

how many people have these guys?

It doesn't look like Thalassophryne amazonica, so I'd think about going brackish, even low-level SW.

I kept before in the past, seemed to do better with added salt. Kept it with various polypterus, H. fossilis, L25 pleco, butis butis ("crazy fish") and others. an ambush predator... it fed on chopped earthworms, nightcrawlers, cut shrimp, frozen krill, silversides, sinking pellets and rosy minnows.

At times would see it hover mid water level during feeding times. Most of the time, would stay at the bottom. Usually would hear it making that weird "grunting" sound during the night Probably defense system to scare off other fish. Enjoy!

Those are cool. To bad it is brackish they got one at my LFS I seen it today and they want 30$ for it. Not a bad deal, but I thought that they were brackish came home to gather info, glad I did not buy it. Love the fish though, and would love it in my FW tank.

But if you do a brackish tank I would get a fw morey, I think they are kickass. If your into that. Yea archers are way cool. There is a vid on youtube about archers, says they shoot at lights, and showed a guy try and light a cig. and the archers would shoot out the lighter flame, you should try that when they get good and relaxed water all over the house hehe.

A swedish importer label these as Haplophryne trispino. Dunno if it helps though because theres nothing on google. But it is a "fw" toadfish alright

If it is making a noise, then it is more than likely an Allenbatrachus grunniens (aka grunting toadfish). I've kept a couple in the past in purely fresh, they did fine and ate only feeders. I would say it is probably easier to keep them alive in brackish though. One of mine died during spawning, the other was fine for 4 years until it died of other causes.

they can live in freshwater. with about 1 tbs for every 3-6 gallons depending on the tankmates. i have had one on hold at the lfs near my house for over 3 months. still waiting to setup my 125 for it. they are definatly one bada$$ fishy. the one at my lfs can engulf 3 inch comets, sideways!!!
