ok so im a freshwater noob, and im buying the biggest tank that i can fit in my place. Tank size is: 30 x 12 x 22 which is 37g.

From what i've read so far, the SA/CA cichlids that will fit in my tank seem a lot cooler than the african alternatives. Some of my likes: vividly colored fish, very active fish with a lot of personality.

So help a noob out with some suggestions on how to stick this new tank!

So far what has been suggested:

apistos - I like the vivid coloration in these guys, very cool.
rams - again, some great coloration.
convicts - they seem like they are badass, i like the head humps they get and amazing parental skills. I'm just afraid of waking up and having 150 convicts to get rid of somehow...
angels - these guys look pretty cool ( i like the black ones), how active are they?
firemouths - cool coloration and a bit larger, not too aggressive.
tetras - as filler/schooling fish for a community tank

So i could go with combinations of the following groups, but not mixxed right? Any other suggestions?

peaceful community - apistos, rams, tetras, angels, kribensis

more aggressive community - convicts, firemouths, curviceps, jewels

The peaceful combo sounds like it would be a more fun group to watch in a 37G. Convicts and FMs in a 37 + other fish just sounds too small and will prolly end in someone getting murdered.

well i didnt necessarily mean all those fish in the same tank, just along the lines of grouping options/categories. Think i could get all the peaceful community fish i listed into the same tank?

the peaceful fish would be easier to do but i would get bored with them after awhile. on the other hand the more aggressive tank (in my opinion) would be cooler.
i had a 29 a few years back with a pair of jewels and convicts and they did jus fine, yes they would have there little fueds but in the end they all did fine.

Ime a jewel will kill all the aggro fish sooner or later. Go with the community set up or maybe try a pair of convicts and a pair or FMs, depending on your tank decor it could work if you

I like the peaceful group, but personally I'd skip the angels (they can get nasty and stress out the smaller ones), and pick one species from apistos (trio), OR rams (pair) OR kribs. And lots of plants ;)

Ever thought about Australoheros? A 37g sounds perfect for a pair.

I have a pair of convicts, firemouths and giant danios in about the same size tank right now and I love it. Make sure you give them lots of hiding places. I bought them small though, they will out grow the tank soon. So if you go that route make sure you are prepared to upgrade or sell. I love the dynamics of the tank though. They are so much fun to watch.

If your convicts start to breed like crazy you just have to buy a monster fish you can feed them to:ROFL:. I read some where that the females have red on their bellys so you could just look out for that and get two females or two males. Also if the male is smaller than the female they probably wont breed. Good Luck!
