Freshwater protein skimmer?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
We use skimmers in freshwater where I work (sturgeon farm) to help mitigate waste. The water isn't agitated much more than in a saltwater skimmer (simple venturi style), but we "skim wet", which means that we are essentially dumping small amounts of water out with the skimmate at all times. Unfortunately this system only works if you have new water constantly entering the system. But the upside to this method is that the viscosity of the skimmate is so low that it just flows down a drain and the fractionator itself never needs to be cleaned.

water is pumped from the pond (in this case)to the column in the 1/2" PVC line, "not up the column" by a 2400gph pump.
As it cascades downward over the rock and opens into the 4" pipe, the partially open valve holds water back just enough to sequester the foam in the large open pipe hole near the lava rock filled column, foam spills onto the ground or into a bucket.
And as stated above, it is usually a bit wetter than salt water aquarium foam.

The Tornado II protein skimmer works on the same fractionating principle as the FW Clarity foam fractionator. The obvious difference is its size. It's only 30" tall so it may be used on small ponds large to medium size tanks. You can see from the waste pan that the skimmate is very dry for a FW system.
