I've been pondering on what to do with my 10 gallon tank since i transfered my fish to a 40....and I was thinking bout making it into a refugium for the 40, heavily planted with some small fish, shrimp and snails. Question is what equipment would you use, (I prefer quality equipment that is reliable than trying to be cheap on it) and what is the best place to put it, under my tank or on the bookcase at the same height right next to it, (reference pic provided)

Because I've actually seen your setup I would say underneath on the stand. That being said you will need powerhead to move water back into the tank. I believe we can make all the tubing from PVC

I love how you are always the first to reply......and the fact you are at work right now!!

Because you texted me and told me you were posting it on here... it's my civic duty to reply :)

I'll be helping him with the setup. What substrate and plants are recommended? I would assume something like eco-complete?

IMO, i would like to add a protein skimmer. I know a lot of people think that they are for SW only but it does help in your water quality in freshwater.

honestly I would personally add a small sump to the system have the 10 gallon beside the 40 and have both drain and be fed from the sump sharing the water.

I completely understand that, as it removes dissolved organic material. However from my understanding they need a certain amount of surface tension and cannot be used on FW. If not which model would you recommend? I know the aquac remora is popular with sw guys...

I think cave man is trying to make a "show" refugium so he can keep cory cats and shrimp in too. I saw Java Moss was popular. Anything else?

I know in sw a dsb or lr bottom is common. Does anyone use a substrate of any kind in their refugium?

Could you devide the tank up and make that into a sump? However once again I think he wants something that can be seen as well

What about equipment? Has anyone built one of these before? Looking for setup ideas (overflow box, pumps, etc) as well as advice of what to put in it.

I'm familiar with the process on sw tanks, but it'd be nice to see ideas/plans anyone has used
