I only had freshwater aquariums and i think that is all I want to own.
I know many freshwater fish will recognize owners and have personalities - are personalities similar or better or worse in salt water fish -
Some other questions
what is the "smartest" fish fresh and/or salt water?
Are there freshwater octopus?
I heard that they are extremely inteligent?

1 yes they have great persnalties :)
2 my p bass can do a flip i don't how to make him do it though..lol idk about salt
3 no
4 yes ocs are very smart :) ONE OF THE SMARTIST

That's a hard question.

There are some very intelligent and also puppylike saltwater fish.

I think most are about like standard freshwater fish though. They'll wait at the front of the tank for food. They see you as a feeder, lol.
There are a lot more easily available saltwater fish that exhibit odd and interesting behavior though.

I dunno what the smartest fish would be. I think it varies by individual, no matter whether salt or fresh.

In general triggers are pretty smart.
Freshwater I don't know. I don't think I can generalize a whole species.

One of things is there is a lot more overbreeding in freshwater fish. Many saltwater fish are wildcaught so I think a lot of the stupid ones have probably been weeded out by natural selection. We don't exactly breed for intelligence, lol.

Schooling fish seem to be some of the dumbest no matter what you're looking at though. I don't just mean fish that hang around together, I mean the ones that survive by schooling, like danios.

There is no freshwater octopus. And yes, octopus are intelligent. I used to have saltwater. Lionfish act a lot like oscars but caution must be taken when attempting to handfeed (more like tongs-feeding) them as they have venomous spines.

I have both and prefer freshwater. Salt can be a pain and the fish are not anymore interesting (with some exceptions). I would keep going fresh unless you find a marine fish you have to have. Octos and cuttle fish are IMO the coolest pets on earth but good luck finding any and then on top of that make sure your ok with an average like span of 6 months...they live fast and die young.

Fish eat fish that is great info - my only real interest in a saltwater tank are oct's but that fact of a 6 month life span is a bummer and may change my mind- any other info on the topic would be appreciated.

Well I know almost everyone who had octos got them from a site called Octopets.com...I think...but they went under so now as far as I know no one can get them its all luck of the draw when someone gets one you have to be in the right place at the right time. I do see them on ebay of all places quite often but like I said they dont live long even in the wild so in the end you spend forever searching for a pet you will just have to replace in less than 6 months...and thats if you happen to find a very young one! But they are hands down amazing creatures so good luck and make sure to PM me and start a thread if you get one so I can see it.
