wow very cool article! i didn't know about freshwater sponges either. I don't have very many hydras, i think something eats them like my ghost shrimps, nymphs,planaria or leeches. since i have been placing lots of infusia for my larva ghost shrimps cyclop population has grown. are brine shrimp easy to maintain in a diverse envoriment? would love a flow up on the sponges

Very nice; would love to get some of those going in my native bog tank. What else have you got going in your native tank?
Glad to see this much interest in my setup! Unfortunately I moved out of my moms several months ago and couldn't take my tank with me.. its still set up but doesn't recieve as much attention as I would like (its a 3.5 hour drive away). There are a couple other threads on here about my setup...look for my freshwater refugium thread for some more pics/info!
Cool man, I wanna find a freshwater sponge one of these days and collect it. People think they look ugly but if you like fish and all the organisms that live with them you appreciate them. I have collected some things before and tossed them in my pond. I know I have leeches now and a bunch of other organisms like scuds etc. I love that I have this little ecosystem. I am not sure if the leeches are plant leeches or blood leeches.
First time I ever seen a FW sponge was when I was swimming in this canyon when I was a kid. It looked like snot and I didn't want to go anywhere near it. But at the time I did not know what it was. First time I ever heard of a FW sponge was a few years back when some guy had one in his tank.

I got lucky when I found mine...I was fishing and spotted a neat looking piece of driftwood sticking out of the water. At the end of the day I grabbed it and noticed some weird "crud" stuck to it lol.
Its odd how this forum gets brought up again because just yesterday doing water changes i noticed that i have some sponge growing on a piece of driftwood right at the water line (its half submersed) there is 4-6 little purple/pinkish looking organisms that appear to look like little tiny nail heads. I accidently rubbed most of them off but there is once piece still on but not large enough to photograph so ill have to wait a bit.
