different companies put out different products, my pool filter sand is made by a company called Target and its dark Tan.

My opinion.... sand is far too difficult to keep clean. It WILL end up in your impellors, and u will be replacing them periodically. No u don't have to remove your fish, no it shouldn't affect your water chemistry and you will need about 20 -30 lbs for a 40 breeder. I hate sand!!!

I don't see how sand is, ''too difficult to keep clean''. the detritus stays on the top for easy removal. i don't even have to do anything in my tanks. i have so much circulation that all detritus is suspended in the water column and gets sucked up by the filters.

some types of sand will end up in the filters, but, to generalize sand this way is foolish. there are many heavy sands on the market that work just fine, because of there high density. i recommend doing some research on sand, im sure u will be pleasantly surprised with how often and how easily it is used.

it really depends what sand you are using. pool filter sand is heavy enough to be cleaned like gravel and is less likely to be sucked into the filter.. play sand etc is another story. but with sand most of the fish poop stays on top... just dont forget to move the sand around during WC. if not, poisonous gas pockets can form.

This is a little off my topic but still has to do with setup an filters an such. I had 5 P's yesterday. 2 of them got taken out an got made lunch by 2 slightly bigger ones. I guess they got tired of the little guys bothering them... But anyhow my water has odor to it now. Could that be because they killed 2 fish an ate them? I did a 50% water change, an Vac. all the stuff out of my gravel. It helped some but still is there. Will it take some time to go away?

An I will be getting sand sat. Will that help it go away? Ill be choosing black sand of some sort. I just admire tanks with black sand.

Added the sand to my tank yesterday. Some pics are in my albums. In those pictures water is a bit cloudy still, but it is clear now. Tank smells funny now, not stinky like the other rotting food/fishy smell. Closest thing I can relate to the smell is a mix between bunch of minerals. Is that because the moon sand?

maybe its because the sand u got is from the moon:WHOA:

i dont understand do you remove your gravel and put new sand in what happens to your bacteria thats being held in the gravel a tank wouldnt have to re cycle with brand new substrate?
