To set it up for saltwater wouldnt he need live rock, live sand and a ton of minerals for the water?

You don't need live sand. I would recommend some live rock, which you can find for cheap if you look--you also don't need a lot in a 29 gallon. You don't need a "ton of minerals," just a basic salt mix like instant ocean.

Seriously, if you like SW, try a SW setup with fish only with live rock. In the end, with the overstocking and heavy filtration needed for an African tank in a 29, I bet they will come out to about the same cost, depending on the stock.

thanks kevin, i really like the look of the african cichlids, i think i may have been inspired enough to go that direction, i wish they weren't so mean :(

African Cichlids with some lace rock and no plants will give you a saltwater look. Most non-fishkeepers think my tank is salt when they first see it.

Buy them as small as you can and remember to get "Mbuna".

They grow to around 4" and get too big to be kept in the tank for life. You'd probably have to sell yours and get new ones every 6 months or so as stated above, unless of course you upgrade :)

wait a sec wait a sec. I read your question and agree with everyone about the salt water tank, but I heard that you have a dragon goby and a blue gourmi in a freshwater tank right? You do know that dragon gobies are brackish water right? Now i am assuming that you got these fish at walmart... because when i was a newb at fish keeping I started out with a dragon goby and walmart stated that they are freshwater. My first goby died, then i bought another, died, then another, died. First they lose their eyes and FREAK OUT in the tank and then curl and die. Careful with him. If he is gray with maybe a pinkish belly, sort of eel like, then I am sorry he is going to die.

If your fish looks like this and is in freshwater then it is going to die. Sorry :(

hmmm, i didn't know that about mr dragon goby, well he has lived in the tank for over 2 years and seems very happy, but i'd rather keep the convo on the salt water thing
