i'm the "Aquatics Lab Technician" at my university's fish lab. Pay $2 above minimum/hr, and I work about 10 hours a week on average but get paid for 19 regardless.

the biology department has a relatively small fish lab, which maintains and breeds populations of mummichogs (a type of beautiful estuarine killifish), fathead minnows, snails, and daphnia.

25 15-gallon mummichog tanks set up under 2 separate filter systems,

2 100 gallon flowing stream systems which contain the aggressive adult male mummichogs who get separated cuz they start going postal on the others (I nickname their tanks the 'shark' tanks, and have occasionally thrown in a couple fathead minnows to watch them get utterly ripped apart),

12 15-gallon fathead minnow tanks set up under another filter system system

and a couple 2g tanks containing daphnia and pond snails.

so anyway its my job to go in every day and make sure everythings alive and well and maintained, and perhaps most importantly, that there aren't any god damn leaks. I change filter media, feed, carbon, change water, generally make sure everythings clean spic and span, clean up the professors' messes, and then help the professors make new messes when they deem it fit.

its really a breeze though for the most part, as i mentioned in the post prior.

btw if anyone ever wants to try out something new, mummichogs are an absolutely stellar fish specie to keep. They require brackish water to thrive best though, and they jump like pole-vaulters. But they have cute little personalities, establish pecking orders, fight and wage war over territory, and have gorgeous coloration. And are very prolific and easy to breed egg-scatterers.

I've stolen quite a few over the last year and stuck them in my tanks, but my cichlids always end up ripping them apart.
