its worth pointing out that the friends_list aswell as a few other tables will be cache'd.

Not sure exactly how I plan to go about that tho,
I will probably just use a flat file system.
mysql -> $username_friendslist.txt

Which will let me rsync to the mirrors.

Storing list of id's in a table is bad. Example 1 is probably the best way of doing it having a bridge table that joins on the user table one column for the user and one column for friend.
