Ok so I was at the beach the past week with a few friends and we went into a surf shop and ended up getting henna tattoos and 3 of them decided to buy some iguanas for some reason and I wanted to get some information for them. This is for my friend Susie this is her iguana, anyway she got a 10gallon setup with some bark type stuff a little thing to climb on and under, a water dish and food dish a heat lamp and one of those blue bulbs to use at night. Anyway how big will this guy get and how fast will she have to upgrade I know she prob want listen to what I have to say but maybe if she gets some more info she will know what she is in for.

To start off, you need to upgrade your tank right now, it is already too small.

What your friends did was an impulse buy. Buying something with absolutely no knowledge about the care it takes for these animals. This is what you need to know.

Reach 5-6 feet long with tail
Require large enclosure, a small bedroom works best.
They require a varied diet of fruits and vegetables with the occasional animal protein.
Special UV lighting is needed a long with vitamin supplements.
Can bite rather hard when adult, also having sharp long claws and a whip like tail.

Just to give you an example, I have been keeping reptiles for over 10 years now and keep large constrictors for the most part. I would not even consider buying an iguana because of the special needs they deserve to live healthy. Get online, and get reading, your friends have a lot of work and responsibility ahead of them if they plan on taking care of these animals.

I agree with Z....greens need an entire room basically when they are adults. This is why shops should ask questions before selling anyone these types of reptiles, they are large.

Ah well this will make this more interesting. So I am going to just try to convince my friends to find them a better home where someone can take care of them how they should be. I don't think any of them had any idea about how much responsibility they require. I am glade I had better sense then to just buy one cause other people did. Thank you for the information.

This. BTW cool iguana!

In no way are folk trying to be mean etc but he'd quickly learn he isn't able to keep it correctly. Re-homing them isn't always an option either

I know no one is trying to be mean or anything. I want whats best for the animal, but like I said its my friends and she probably will not listen what I have to say but I knew they got big just didn't know how fast. Thank you for all the info guys I am going to try to convince her to try to get something she would be able to manage better cause I know she has not intention on keeping a animal that will get that big and require the kind of attention that this one needs.

Its good to hear someone say they want whats best for the animal, alot of people just dont care, ya know.

I wouldnt be too concerned about how big they get or how fast they grow, most people who buy them on impulse, with little knowlege of the animal or its husbandry requirements usually end up killing them way before they become adults.

To bad, it looks a really healthly animal, in that first pic.
