My mom bought a baby red marlburogh or somthin like that and it cant seem to stop catching a fungus or bacteria infection. im not sure what it is (disease) but its in a 15 and after a week it got it and i moved it to a tank with a bunch if medicine and it is fine in the morning. This has happend 3 times even after i drained the tank and did a 100% water change. the tank has a acidic ph and the tank is spotless with no amonia. Any tips for keeping this guy healthy?

what is the water hadness? what do you do to ensure the water stays soft? (peat media in filter, bogwood, water changes with RO/distilled water). what is the exact pH? any tankmates? how often do you check ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, pH, all that stuff? (and what are all the exact measurments for all of those?) what is your maintenance schedule? (you change/clean the filter cartridges every ____days/weeks/months, you do a water change and vacuum the gravel every ____ days/weeks/months). discus get big and cant stay in a small tank like that for long, and it is better to start them in a bigger tank anyways due to the chemical stability of a bigger tank. what is the tamp?

discus also need soft water like low mineral content

and unlike most tropical fish discus need HIGH temperature water

84-86 degreesn F

who ever say thats too high just lick your palm and slap them

discus will not thrive in 80-82 F water

and keep up on water changes, discus do not tolerate nitrates period.

and keep them on high a high protein nutrient rich food as discus are a highly carnivorous fish and required a diet high in protein diet.

i cant recommend you anything but i can suggest the New Life Spectrum discus formula

hikari also has a good quality discus food

hope this helps :)

discus actually do have a very good immune system

but since these fish have evolved to live in an environment so pure that a strong immune system is not nessesary

now when you place them in a alien environment with a closed system such as an aquarium, they cannot fight off the pathogens that they never or rarely encounter in the wild, so its your job to get the water condition as close as possible to what they have back home

stress also has a lot to do with illness. without stress an otherwise healthy fish can usually fight off most diseases.

delgado, why the emphasis on recommendations and suggestions? and what do you consider to be the difference?

i think they are the same thing. what attracts you to that one over others? i like hikari a lot and would go with hikari by default, but both would be good, variety is always a good option.

reptileguy2727 asked alot of the right questions and you must have them answered to properly care for the little guy. Also, If he is the only Discus he will not fair well for long, Discus are social and they need at least five for a reasonable comfort level. :headbang2

Since the home of your discus have been tanks for several generations it is not necessary to recreate conditions like you'd have to for wild ones.

Discus prefer 85 F but will survive at 60F and at 80 they do just fine.

Discus have no problem with nitrates.
I kept discus for up to four months without changing water and occasionaly the temperature dropped below 50.

Discus don't like to live alone. They love Tetra Colorbits and beefheart.
