Hey guys, I'm looking for a new herp to keep. A lizard that grows 2-3ft can be tamed and dosen't require a ton of maintanence. I think frilled dragons might be a good fit but I can't find much on them. Anyone keep these guys or know any info on them? Also anyone know any other lizards that fit into this category?

And I know what your thinking, bearded dragons! I don't want beardies because...well...everyone has beardies. Although beardies might be a last option.

For a tame lizard, a bearded is the best option, otherwise I do believe blue tongue skinks can be quite tame? I do think Frilled lizards can be skittish, but I don't have any experience so I really can't say for sure.

maybe a captive-breed savannah monitor

i had one for about 2 years from a baby to about 2 feet but i beleive they get much larger then 3 feet so that might be out of the question , but my monitor was tame

All animals can become "tame" It just takes time and frequent handling. Plus I've seen some vids of frills with thier owners and I believe It can work.

First of frilled dragons are by no means a beginer reptile by a number of factors. They grow quite large, they are not only skitish but also can bite :naughty: , they require a much complex habitat in order to trive and most that apear on the trade are wild caut (they are new guinea frillies not Australia ones) Australian ones apear from time to time and they are captive bred but much more expensive. Also dont assume they will tame down, most will not, what you can kind of expect is that they will tolerate your presence. But allow you to handle them is a completley diferent mater. Also you saying that you dont want a bearded dragon (a much wiser choise) because "everyone has them" tells me that you are looking for a status simbol, a way to be cool and not because you are deply in love with that animal, wich is one of the worst arguments to get a pet. One day all of your friends get tyerd of seeing it and you simply neglect it? Or dump it? Here everyone that has herps of some kind has or once had a green iguana or a slider. Both are as common as rats but I simply dont care, I love sliders and iguanas and will always have some, even if there are more fancy herps avaible. They are my pets and my friends. Please think twice on what you are about to do;) Oh and by the way that "frequent handling " will just stress him out. Many bad things can get him then

whoa whoa. I do very much realize frilled dragons are much harder to keep. I do realize the can grow to 3ft long and will need a 4'LX2'WX4'T bare minimum. I do realize that they can be skittish and that they can giva a nasty bite. And I do realize they don't appreciate handling as much as othe reptiles. Saying that I wanted to keep them because I wanted to be "cool" was completely inaccurate and inappropriate. I love reptiles and I always do everything I can to make sure they stay happy and healthy. I've been keeping lizards for as long as I can remember and It wasn't because I wanted to be "cool", it's because I love reptiles and I love to keep them. I might not be as exsperienced as you when keeping herps but I know enough to know what I am getting into. The reason why I wanted to get a frilled dragon was to get something a little harder to take care of. Does that make me a bad person because I want to keep more challenging reptiles? I'm also considering a B/W tegu and a Amazon tree boa as a next pet. I do realize both of these are challenging and potentially bitey pets. I do exstensive research on all my herps to make sure I know what I'm getting into. If I don't think I can take care of it I don't attempt to keep it.

Now that is what I wanted to hear from you:D Sorry for being kind of harsh but there where 2 things working here:
First I dint know you where such a experienced herp keeper and assumed this was your first time whit herps
Second, that thing of "no beardys because everyone has them" fool me into thinking that you where looking for a animal to "show of" and not because you really cared about it. But you must understed that from time to time some people apear asking this same questions, both on my private life and on MFK that truly deserve the same coments I applyed to you. The last guy that deserved this was a guy at my LFS that likes to take its iguana to the beach on a leach:screwy: Putted simply it was nothing more than a missunderstud :D Now given this new "data" I would say that a frilled dragon is a potencial very legimate choice for you. They are more or less a intermediate species, being more dificult than beginers species, say leopard geckos, and more easier than advanced species, say red headed basiliscks. Just remenbar that you must allow the lizard to come to you not force him into become tame. Also buy only captive bred ones. Given this I think you deserve a treat. Here´s a web site with all sorts of info on frilleds and its also a breeding facility from wich you can purchase your new pet:http://frilldragon.com/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=33 :D
