Frogfish

Do any of you know of any site with good information on frogfish. I'm planning on setting one up in a 30 gal. species tank. Some friends of mine at a local pet store got one as a local trade in. I'm not sure what kind it is yet. I think either a painted or giant (I realize if it is a giant it will need at least a 75)

This will be my first salt tank, but I do have a few experienced friends willing to help me out.
Any info and advice you guys could give me would be appriecated. Thanks.
 
I don't think so. By frog fish I mean anglerfish. I have seen them mentioned on other posts so I know at least a few peopole have kept them. If no one has any specific information I would atleast like to know what your impresions of them were.
 
I have some Gulf toadfish (Opsanus beta) that I've heard people call frog fish before. I also think they're related to angler fish. Right now I have two. I catch them all the time when I go fishing.

frogfish are the most amazing marine creatures there are!:grinyes: When they slowly move closer and closer to there prey stalking it ever so slowly and then out of nowhere there mouth expands to twice its size and swallows the prey whole:cry: Frogfish are so cool in all of their amazing colors black, orange, green,yellow and red!:thumbsup: :woot:
I have 3 right now they are:
1-miniture frogfish
1-4" brown frogfish(dont remember names)
1-10" black frogfish:grinyes:
the first two are in a 65 and the other one would probally eat them so he is in a 210.
I try to feed the little guys every day live ghost shrimp but frozen works too, to bulk them up and to be strong and the other dude eats whatever goes in front of him(thankfully not its tankmates):)
They are really kool creatures and are fun to watch. If you want more info on them or have any questions...pm me and ill be glad to answer to the best of my knowledge. One thing you have to worry about is this thick mucus they can get on there face if you have poor water quality. You can brush it right off with your finger but be gentleand dont worry it rarely happens:grinyes:

Toadfish are not related to frogfish, and I don't think you will need a 75 for a large commersons because they don't need that much room. I guess it depends on the dimensions but I would not go with a long tank. Short and wide would be better. Awesome choice on fish man! You will love it. These are my favorite and I got the chance to speak with Scott W. Michael at the Western Marine Conference last weekend about frogfish. They are his favorite as well. There are some very knowledgable folks over at Grimreefers.com about frogfish.
 
I personally would set up a sump refugium and skimmer if this is your first tank. It will make it very easy to maintain, especially because frogfish have solid waste which sinks to the bottom and can be vacuumed out directly and tends not to pollute the water very badly. Having said that, you could probably also just use a hang-on-tank skimmer that was slightly over rated for your tank and be fine, just keep up the water quality. Keep the flow rates subdued also, frogs don't appreciate being buffeted by a strong current. Check out Reef Fishes Vol. 1 by Scott W. Michael, it has an excellent chapter on frogfish.
 
Thanks for the info. I'm friend of mine is giving me a large skimer, I don't know its rating but she uses it on her 55gal (I just need to get a new collection cup for it). I think I'm going to start off with just the 30 gal. but I will eventualy link it to another 30gal. so I can keep other fish without the fear of them being eaten.

Ah frog fish the only reason i dont keep them is because of the inactivitly. The kind of just sitt there and wait for prey to swim by and with a quik snag the foods gone. Best of luck:)
