Thanks for the info. I'm friend of mine is giving me a large skimer, I don't know its rating but she uses it on her 55gal (I just need to get a new collection cup for it). I think I'm going to start off with just the 30 gal. but I will eventualy link it to another 30gal. so I can keep other fish without the fear of them being eaten.
don4921 thanks for the info and I'll keep you in mind if I need help.
no problem:thumbsup:

Just a word of caution with them: I have found them to be one of the most exciting fish to feed feeders to, but don't!!

I had a huge black one (must have been 10"), as it showed up by accident in a shipment at my LFS. I picked him up, brought him home, and kept him for 2 months. He ate really well on frozen shrimp and small frozen fish like anchovies, sticklebacks, etc., (used a piece of wire to bat around the the thawed out food and make it seem 'alive' in front of him, as he would never pick up a piece off the ground). After a long time, I came to the realization that I couldn't really mix anything with him except other lionfish, as most shops don't carry fish big enough for him not to swallow. They got a small black/white one in, so I traded him straight up. Well, this guy would NEVER eat shrimp, or anything else for that matter. Eventually I succumbed and fed him some live GOLDFISH. Well, he ate 4 of them, then started swimming around like a jack. Knew he was a goner right away. He finally stopped swimming, settled down on the sand, and breathed slowly for the next 3 days. On the 4th day, he was in exactly the same position, only he wasn't breathing anymore. Left him for a few hours 'just to make sure', and he was definitely dead.

Cause? Probably goldfish. I am sure he was a bit stressed to begin with, but the goldfish definitely sent him off quicker. Even my lionfish would turn white on the days he was fed feeders. Never, ever feed your marine fish goldfish!!

Definitely exciting watching them use their lure and the suspense of having the goldfish pass by that super-speed mouth, just waiting for the strike... pretty exciting! Buy a damsel or something if you really want to see it :)

I've herd that there is something in fresh water fish that marine fish can't digest. Plus feeder gold fish a parasite ridden anyway. I plan on feeding the one I get damsiels until I can get it to swich to frozen/thawed fish. I plan to get 1-2 pound test fishing line and tie just inside of the dorsal fin. I will then "fish" for the frogfish, and the line should tear out of the fin when the frogfish strikes. I just have to wait for my tank to finish cycling, but I'm almost there (ammonia .30 ppm, nitrite 0ppm, nitrate 15ppm)

dude it is not that much work to have them u dont need any of that stuff
Just feed him live ghost shrimp every 2-3 days and they will be fine
basic carelevel man and plus feeding damsels will get exspensive
also, when u say gold fish that is not always considered a feeder.
if u have a good lf store they will probably give u some feeders to start out wit
and normally feeders are not goldfish they are usually guppies, mollies or other smaller misbreeds and if treated rite they will be perfectly fine for ur frogger.
and rui ur frogfish could have been pulled out of the water when they caught him in the wild and they can not have any air or they get gas and start to swim to get it out . when u fed it gold fish it probly joked on it that is y it was breathing hard and then suffacated and if u notice he was swimming and not breathing properly why did u not take it back or treat him they have meds just for froggers or even put him in an isolation tank or quarantine tank. U could still have that frogger ...o well. no offense here either kk:thumbsup:He probly did not eat cus he was not hungry enough

oh yeah and they will eventually eat some flake food when u have had them for about a year so have fun wit it. Hope ur tank is ready soon

The owner of the LFS called me yesterday and told me the frogfish died. She had had it for about a month, and in that time it had only eaten once. She thinks it may have been going down hill before the previous owner had given it to her.

This turn of events saddens me, however she is willing to order me any frogfish at cost. Her supplier only list the frogfish by color, and one is called a walking frogfish. Do any of you know of any suppliers that with a good selection of frogfish sorted by species, and not color?

Also, how long do ghost shrimp survive in saltwater, I thought they were freshwater.

Thank you for all your help.

Are there such thing as captive bread frogfish, I don't like depleating wild populations.

Do yourself a favor and do not feed any "feeders"! You can get them on frozen and fresh marine fish flesh very easily. Try using a bamboo skewer from the grocerie store, instead of the fishing line. Stab it through the caudle peduncle of the frozen silverside or whatever you are using to feed and point the skewer at the frogfish, the skewer will hide behind the profile of the bait and you can then move the bait around to entice the frog. I kept two species in a 55 with a CPR Dual Bak-Pak skimmer and one Rio 600 powerhead for added flow and a divder in the middle of the tank. They were trained like puppy dogs, and in a short while they would even swim up to take food by hand. To exercise there hunting abilities, however, I usually made them "hunt" for it for a minute first. They seem quite intelligent and are my favorite fish that I have ever kept, and I have kept a lot.:D

If you use feeders as a treat use small mollies that you have acclimated to strong brackish for a couple weeks. They also eat worms by the way. I have never owned one but have had several friends that have. Liveaquria generally carries sargasso fish, A. striata, and A. commersi, plus others.
